Notes on Humility

A very brief summary of Andrew Murray’s book “Humility.”

Ways to recover humility, our intended nature:

  • Remember your creatureliness
  • Remember the example of Jesus’ life
  • Consent to part with and cast away self, to let God be all
  • Honor each person, no matter how humble, as a child of the king (or potential child of the king)
  • Absorb every vexation by others as a means for humbling
  • Remember the sinful state you were in
  • Ponder that faith, as a confession of need, requires humility as prerequisite
  • Disavow self-seeking, self-will, self-confidence and self-exaltation
  • Remember that God will exalt us at the right time
  • Fearlessly die to self and entrust your life to God daily
  • Take pleasure in all difficulties that bring humbling; count them as blessings
  • Accept that your greatest glory is to reflect the glory of God

“As it is in the height and breadth and glory of the sunshine that the littleness of the dust speck playing in its beams is seen, even so humility is the taking our place in God’s presence to be nothing but a mote dwelling in the sunlight of His love.”  -Andrew Murray
